The Land

In the tranquil heart of Chikmagalur, where the story of Indian coffee began, Vasthare unfolds across a hundred acres of bounteous terrain.

Nestled at 1,200 meters above sea level in the Western Ghats, Vasthare Estate lies within one of the world’s greatest biodiversity sanctuaries. Here, coffee flourishes alongside nature’s most delicate rhythms.

Set amidst Chikmagalur’s tropical climate, the estate embodies a balance of warmth, mist, and elevation — elements that nurture the delicate Arabica beans into a rich and nuanced expression.

Tall Silver Oaks, intertwined with pepper vines, create an integral microclimate where coffee matures slowly. The natural balance of light and shade shelter the varietals from harsh sun and rain.

The estate is home to hundreds of species of flora alongside specialty Arabica. Jackfruit, Papaya, Orange, Honey, and more grow naturally and organically throughout the lands.

Our shade-grown ecosystem nurtures wildlife, where coffee and nature coexist in harmony. Over two hundred bird species, like the elusive Asian Paradise Flycatcher, grace our mornings.

The estate is a living ecosystem where animals roam freely across the vast landscape. Their presence enriches the soil, breathing life into the earth that nourishes our coffee plants.

Our process

We combine traditional farming methods with modern techniques to ensure the highest quality coffee. Our process involves many rounds of meticulous hand-sorting, ensuring only the finest beans make it to cup.

Our estate features Catui — a hybrid variety from Central America first introduced to India in the 90s. We cultivate with organic methods, using a natural fertilizer of culled plants and pulped coffee fruit to nourish our soil.

After careful hand-picking, the cherries undergo a ritualistic process of selection, their ripeness assessed through discerning eyes and hands of skilled sorters. Each fruit thoughtfully inspected, its texture and hue studied, ensuring only those embodying perfection are chosen.

The selected cherries undergo another round of sorting, in which buoyant floaters are delicately separated. The remaining beans undergo a deliberate and patient process of fermentation. This meticulous approach enhances its body and texture, while preserving the purity of its flavor.

The beans are washed and pulped, and laid out on raised beds to sun-dry — a process that enriches the coffee’s body, reduces acidity, and preserves the integrity of our small-batch process. The beans go through another stage of hand-sorting before the roasting phase.

Roasting at Vasthare is a refined craft, with each batch carefully monitored to unlock its full potential. Degassing follows, allowing the beans to rest for ten days in special glass chambers, revealing the intricate balance of flavor and aroma.

The roasted beans go through a final round of hand-sorting, curating only the finest beans that make it to our packaging. Sustainably designed, it is the final touch in our journey from seed to cup.

The community

The spirit of Vasthare is embodied in its people — a devoted community that nurtures the land with care and tradition. Rooted in the estate, their lives intertwine with its legacy, creating a harmonious bond where craftsmanship, stewardship, and shared purpose flourish across generations.

Throughout the year, a community of dedicated workers lives on the estate, cultivating, harvesting, and handcrafting each step of the coffee-making process.

We cherish the people who call Vasthare home. Beyond the fields, we provide housing, clean water, electricity, and healthcare, while supporting the education of their children with interest-free loans.

During harvest, our workforce swells to over 70, many choosing to live on the estate. It is a time when tradition and toil come together, transforming labor into an enduring legacy of craftsmanship.

The Vasthare community is a living testament to our shared values of care, respect, and unity. Rooted in the land and nurtured through generations, we are bound by the story of our estate and the people who sustain it.
